Weekly Beatific – Upside Down

Like an open book, you watched me grow from conception to birth;

all the stages of my life were spread out before you,

The days of my life all prepared

before I’d even lived one day. Ps. 139:16(msg)

In the past few years, we have had the opportunity to spend a week away in some quirky houses. I call them quirky because they are not set in the normal traditional layout that we are used to. Nevertheless, we have found out that they have been the most enjoyable and memorable places we have stayed. But what is surprising about these houses is that they were built upside down. I’m sure you’re wondering what I mean by that. By that I mean, rather than the sitting room and kitchen being downstairs as you enter the house, they are upstairs.

Initially, we were all disgruntled when we learned that we would have to climb a set of stairs before getting to the sitting room. But on both occasions, to our surprise when we opened the blinds in the sitting room upstairs, we were exposed to the fantastic views of the sea, the ships and the beauty of the horizon. It was a magnificent sight to behold. The wonderful scenes of the sun going down and rising (if we dared to wake up that early) were breathtaking. We found out that they must have built the place like this to capture the beauty of the scenery outdoors. It came to me that ‘To capture the beauty, you have to change the status quo.’

Sometimes, in our lives, we find ourselves in situations that seem upside down and our initial reaction is to complain and reject such situations. We are unaware that God is pushing us to capture the beauty and the lasting blessings we are to enjoy. But to do so, He has to turn things upside down from the normal to the abnormal so that we can have a permanent enjoyment of what He has planned for us. Remember Joseph’s story. God had to turn his life upside down to get him to the palace. And we all know how that worked out for him.

So, the next time you go through that season when it seems like things in your life are upside down or things are going in an unconventional manner opposed to the normal status quo, it might just be that God is working all things for your good for you to capture the beauty of what He has reserved for you. So walk in it, embrace it and remember that sometimes, things in your life need to be upside down to capture the essence and beauty of His purpose in it.

Have a lovely week.

Every Grace & Peace
